Once upon a time (in 1719, to be exact), Thomas Willoughby was caught in a Yorkshire snowstorm. Lost and hopeless in the frozen countryside, he stumbled upon- what would one day become- Birdsall House wedding venue.

The furniture is comfortable, and ever-so-stylish. The light is flawless; the walls are covered in art. You make your way down that iconic oak staircase, your veil trailing behind you down the stairs. 

Then it’s vows in the gardens (or the church, the ruins, the dining room, or the ballroom!) You have drinks in the sunshine, and portraits in the gardens. You eat outside to the sound of birds, or have dinner in the ballroom beneath sparkling chandeliers.

But when I visited Birdsall House earlier this year, it was the colours more than anything that took my breath away. 

The staircase overflowing with spectacular florals; peonies, alliums, and garden roses. The elegant stationery in blush and mauve; the delicate arrangements in blush, violet, and butter yellow. And that breathtaking three-tiered cake, where the flowers just seemed to melt into the icing itself. 

Your wedding in Birdsall House will be beautiful no matter what. But add splashes of colour, and it’ll bring the place alive.

4. Your couples portraits for your wedding in Birdsall House

It’s so important, I think, to find a little space on your wedding day. To escape the crowds for a while, reconnect, and make time for you. 

And Birdsall House wedding venue- with its 13,000 acres of gardens, parkland and woodland- is the perfect place to go exploring.

We strolled through those sundrenched grounds. Callum in his classic black tux; Kimberley in her intricate flowing gown, elegant hair and makeup, and waterfall tulip bouquet. 

We found peacocks, and rhododendrons, and blissfully quiet corners. We had photos on *those* steps, and wandered in awe through the thousand-year-old ruins. 

And if it’s raining? The house itself is just as beautiful. Achingly stylish, and effortlessly chic; welcoming and warm, and oh-so-photogenic. 

As a wedding photographer, this place is a playground. As a just-married couple, it’s an absolute dream.

  • 5. A streamlined day with endless options

  • As un-romantic as it sounds, there are always practicalities to consider! The people, the spaces, the accommodation, the rainy day Plan B…

But with Birdsall House, you really are spoiled for choice:

  • Get married in the on-site church with up to 200 guests. 
  • Have your ceremony in the ballroom with 150.
  • Say your vows outside- on the veranda, or by the monastic ruins. 
  • Have up to 150 guests for your wedding breakfast in the ballroom
  • Party with 200 in The Old Kitchen
  • Or have a 300-strong party in the marquee. 

There’s on-site rooms for 12 people. And space for 56 more at their partner venue 3 miles down the road.
