The soft romance of it all

Once upon a time (in 1719, to be exact), Thomas Willoughby was caught in a Yorkshire snowstorm. Lost and hopeless in the frozen countryside, he stumbled upon- what would one day become- Birdsall House wedding venue.

He slammed his fist on those giant front doors; the family opened up, and took him in from the cold. And as he stood in the hallway shaking snow from his hair, he looked up…

And met Elizabeth.

They fell wildly, madly, head-over-heels in love. And they lived happily. Ever. After.

And when you have your wedding in Birdsall House, that’s how it’ll feel.

Like you’re living in an old-world romance novel.

The atmosphere, the tranquility, the immaculate gardens; the elegant comfort, the endlessly stunning backdrops. This venue is truly an experience.

Here’s 5 reasons you’ll love having your wedding in Birdsall House- with a beautifully-styled editorial for inspiration.

1. The beautiful spaces; the effortless flow

Your morning begins in one of the (many) majestic rooms of Birdsall House wedding venue.

The furniture is comfortable, and ever-so-stylish. The light is flawless; the walls are covered in art. You make your way down that iconic oak staircase, your veil trailing behind you down the stairs.

Then it’s vows in the gardens (or the church, the ruins, the dining room, or the ballroom!) You have drinks in the sunshine, and portraits in the gardens. You eat outside to the sound of birds, or have dinner in the ballroom beneath sparkling chandeliers.

And as night falls, you follow your feet into The Old Kitchens. You dance, and drink, and party with your people; you laugh until your cheeks ache, and fall into bed.

This venue has no weak link, no lesser-than choice. Every part of your day is cared-for, considered, and beautifully-backdropped. And it all just flows from one space to the next.

2. How to style your wedding in Birdsall House

One of the best things about Birdsall House is how visually versatile it is.

Have a ceremony on the veranda and dinner in the ballroom- perfectly paired with pure-white details, and classic black-tie. Or you could get married by the ruins, and have a party in the marquee. And fill your day with that laid-back, boho, understated style.

But when I visited Birdsall House earlier this year, it was the colours more than anything that took my breath away.

The staircase overflowing with spectacular florals; peonies, alliums, and garden roses. The elegant stationery in blush and mauve; the delicate arrangements in blush, violet, and butter yellow. And that breathtaking three-tiered cake, where the flowers just seemed to melt into the icing itself.

Your wedding in Birdsall House will be beautiful no matter what. But add splashes of colour, and it’ll bring the place alive

3. A venue for all seasons, and all weather

Another reason Birdsall House photographs so beautifully is how it changes throughout the year.

The gardens are beautiful; lovingly cared-for, and centuries old. Every season offers a new experience, new colours, and a completely different feel to your day.

Spring brings blossom, wisteria, and epic rhododendrons. Summer brings roses and peonies, and gorgeous golden evenings. Autumn is amber, copper, and gold. Winter brings sparkler-dark nights, and dove-grey skies.

You can spend your day in the gardens, and have games on the grass. And or head indoors- to candlelight, cosiness, and roaring fires.

And I think that’s the unsung beauty of Birdsall House wedding venue. There isn’t a ‘wrong date’ to choose. Your options here are flawless- indoor and outdoor, all through the year.

4. Your couples portraits for your wedding in Birdsall House

It’s so important, I think, to find a little space on your wedding day. To escape the crowds for a while, reconnect, and make time for you

And Birdsall House wedding venue- with its 13,000 acres of gardens, parkland and woodland- is the perfect place to go exploring.

We strolled through those sundrenched grounds. Callum in his classic black tux; Kimberley in her intricate flowing gown, elegant hair and makeup, and waterfall tulip bouquet

We found peacocks, and rhododendrons, and blissfully quiet corners. We had photos on *those* steps, and wandered in awe through the thousand-year-old ruins.

And if it’s raining? The house itself is just as beautiful. Achingly stylish, and effortlessly chic; welcoming and warm, and oh-so-photogenic

As a wedding photographer, this place is a playground. As a just-married couple, it’s an absolute dream.

  • 5. A streamlined day with endless options

  • As un-romantic as it sounds, there are always practicalities to consider! The people, the spaces, the accommodation, the rainy day Plan B…

But with Birdsall House, you really are spoiled for choice:

  • Get married in the on-site church with up to 200 guests.
  • Have your ceremony in the ballroom with 150.
  • Say your vows outside- on the veranda, or by the monastic ruins.
  • Have up to 150 guests for your wedding breakfast in the ballroom
  • Party with 200 in The Old Kitchen
  • Or have a 300-strong party in the marquee.

There’s on-site rooms for 12 people. And space for 56 more at their partner venue 3 miles down the road.

You can have welcome drinks the night before, and a foggy-headed breakfast the day after. Lean into the experience, and make a weekend of it with the people you love. And if you ever need anything? Their dedicated events team will guide you through.
